Why Repose exists

The problem

Most tools that redesign a room from a photo give you back a different room: the sofa you own has become another sofa, and the window has moved. That is a nice picture of somewhere else, and it is no help when you are deciding whether to buy one lamp.

Repose starts from the photo you took, so what comes back is your room with the change you asked for.

How it works

You take a photo and pick one of eleven tools. Four of them ask you to choose an area first: Custom edit, Replace an object, Try a paint color and Change the flooring. For paint and flooring, every pixel outside that area is put back from your original photo on the device, so the rest of the room is exactly as you photographed it. The other seven tools work on the whole photo.

A slider then compares the result against the original, so you are checking a design against the room you actually have. The press page lists all eleven.

Who makes it

Nicholas Rempel

Repose is made by one person in Victoria, British Columbia. I'm Nicholas Rempel, and software development is my career. I'm a husband and a dad; my son is six, and most of my time outside work goes to him. The rest goes to cooking, reading, technology, and the cat.

We bought our first house three years ago, and it has been a constant stream of small improvements since. Deciding what to change is the slow part. I wanted to see a wall in a different colour, or the room without the sofa in it, before committing to any of it. The tools I tried handed me back a different house, which told me nothing about mine. So I built the one that changes the thing I picked and leaves the rest of the room alone.

Where it runs

Repose runs on iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo, closed and open. There are screens from every device on the press page.
